Exploring Nature, Stories, and Creativity in Fox Room

Children in Fox Room have been fully immersed in a variety of exciting and enriching activities this week, embracing the outdoors and developing key skills through play and exploration.

With the recent rainy weather, the children have been fascinated by water play—collecting rainwater in buckets, splashing in puddles, and even creating flowing ‘rivers’ in the sandpit. These experiences support their understanding of the natural world and physical development, aligning with the EYFS area of Understanding the World and Physical Development.

In our allotment, the children have been busy watering plants using repurposed milk containers, showing care and responsibility for their environment. They’ve planted potatoes, leeks, strawberries, cabbages, and tomatoes, which not only nurtures their curiosity about growth and change but also links to Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Understanding the World.

Indoors, storytelling has taken centre stage as the children created their own story maps of Jack and the Beanstalk. This activity encouraged imaginative thinking and early literacy skills, supporting the EYFS area of Literacy and Communication and Language.

We’ve also been focusing on name recognition, with many children beginning to write their own names—an important milestone in early writing development, directly supporting the Literacy goals of the EYFS.

Playtime in the meadow has been full of energy and laughter with games like Duck Duck Goose, while musical exploration has continued with instruments in the garden, fostering creativity and rhythm in line with the Expressive Arts and Design area.

To top it all off, the children enjoyed some hands-on cooking, making rice crispie cakes and activities that blend sensory exploration, mathematics, and fine motor skills.

It’s been a joyful and productive time in Fox Room, with every activity thoughtfully supporting the children’s development across the EYFS framework.
