Bumblebee Room at Knowle West Nursery School has been having a wonderful time with the much-loved story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and the children have been throwing themselves into it with real enthusiasm!
Using a story sack, the children have been retelling the story together and acting it out, sitting in the big, medium and little chairs just like Goldilocks herself. This kind of imaginative, role-play based storytelling is brilliant for developing language and communication skills, and it is so lovely to see children bring a familiar story to life in their own way.
Goldilocks has also been a brilliant springboard for early mathematics, with lots of talk about size, comparing big, medium and small, and exploring numbers together in a context that feels exciting and relevant to the children.
Alongside all of this, the children have been exploring mixing and combining different textures and colours, including making their very own porridge! These sensory experiences naturally weave in mathematical language around quantity and texture, and the children have been chatting away as they mix, pour and discover.
